Stop Using AI to Sound Smart on LinkedIn: It’s Killing Your Credibility

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend on LinkedIn: AI-generated bios that scream “fake.” They’re painfully obvious, stuffed with flowery, empty phrases that make everyone sound the same. It’s like someone went shopping for buzzwords without any idea what they actually mean.

Using tools like ChatGPT can be incredible for developing content, but if you just copy and paste a generic response, it’s clear as day. Your LinkedIn bio ends up sounding more like a desperate sales pitch than an authentic introduction. It’s boring. It’s wordy. And it comes off as lazy—the digital equivalent of a used car salesman rattling off features they don’t understand.

Here’s the hard truth: if you’re serious about connecting with people on LinkedIn, you need to bring authenticity to the table. Using AI without knowing what you’re trying to convey makes you look inexperienced.

Before you even touch an AI tool, ask yourself these questions:

  • Why am I on LinkedIn?

  • Who do I actually want to reach?

  • What do I want people to feel when they read my profile?

  • What makes me worth connecting with?

Example: Let’s say I’m a brand strategist 😉 A generic AI response might say, “I am a passionate, results-driven strategist dedicated to elevating brand experiences.”

But does that really sound like me?

Instead, I could say something like: “I collaborate with businesses of all sizes to uncover their strengths and transform them into powerful brand experiences. My process blends research and intuition with strategy, rooted in a deep understanding of each client’s vision. I’m here to connect with others who are ready to go beyond the noise and make an impact.”

Which one feels more real?

Your LinkedIn bio should be the opposite of a quick fix. If you want people to connect with you in a meaningful way, make your message intentional and unique to you.

And for the sake of this post, I used ChatGPT to write it. But I knew exactly what my message was, and I made sure it reflected who I am. AI can be powerful, but only when used thoughtfully. So, stop, think, and make your message real—because if it’s fake, everyone can tell.
